About the Role
SpaceX's design criteria and reliability team ensures flight hardware and operations complete missions while meeting design requirements. You'll evaluate and guide engineering designs from concept to flight, facilitating cross-disciplinary problem-solving across all SpaceX programs.
Responsibilities
- Ensure SpaceX design process and design criteria/requirements are followed for flight, launch, and recovery systems
- Provide critical peer review and approval of hardware designs during design reviews, and of acceptance and qualification test campaigns
- Develop design criteria, requirements, and verification approaches for new systems
- Set up new processes to enable reliable aircraft-like operations of launch vehicles and spacecraft
- Drive improvements to vehicle design by being closely integrated with hardware teams
- Review vehicle changes to ensure all hardware and operations are qualified
- Develop specialized design and analysis tools for other engineering groups
Requirements
Basic:
- Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline
- 1+ years of professional experience in a hardware engineering role
Preferred:
- Master's degree in an engineering discipline
- Hardware experience in fabrication, assembly, and/or testing (professional, academic, or recreational)
- Experience with aircraft, launch vehicles, spacecraft, or aerospace systems
- Experience with commercial FEA packages (NASTRAN, ABAQUS, or ANSYS)
- Hardware ownership on award-winning engineering projects or competition teams (FSAE, Design-Build-Fly, NASA Student Launch, etc.)
- Electromechanical system design, analysis, testing, and fabrication for high-performance or safety-critical applications
- Hands-on experience with industry standard manufacturing tools, techniques and processes (mills, lathes, electronics assembly, composite layup, etc.)
- Material selection and make vs. buy decision experience
- Scripting and data analysis using Visual Basic, MATLAB, Python, and Excel
Additional:
- Must be available to work long hours and weekends as necessary
Compensation
Level I: $100,000 to $130,000 per year
Level II: $115,000 to $160,000 per year
Actual level and base salary determined case-by-case based on job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.
