About the Role
SpaceX is deploying Starlink, the world's largest satellite constellation, delivering fast internet to millions worldwide. As a Sr. Automation & Controls Engineer, you will lead creative, multi-disciplinary projects spanning machine design, robotics, motion systems, and factory health monitoring.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and manage automation projects from factory ideation through machine commissioning, proof of rate capability, and handoff to operational teams
- Architect, write, and debug PLC code that is organized, structured, documented, maintainable, and reusable for high-volume manufacturing
- Implement ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA compliant systems for robots, gantries, conveyors, and manufacturing equipment
- Create simple, usable HMI screens for complex machines to support operation and troubleshooting
- Design electrical systems compliant with NEC, NFPA, and UL508A regulations
- Manage project schedules and budgets, leading teams to meet milestones
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or computer science
- 5+ years of experience in industrial or factory automation design and implementation
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Electromechanical systems design and troubleshooting
- Electrical sizing of motors, cables, circuit protection, VFDs, motor starters, and motion systems
- Fail-safe electrical circuits using safety logic controllers and safety-rated relays
- Industrial electrical troubleshooting with multimeters, oscilloscopes, EMI probes
- Electrical schematics and single line diagrams (EPLAN preferred)
- Field bus networks, serial communication, Ethernet communication
- Design and commissioning of electrical panels and electro-mechanical systems
- Knowledge of NEC, NFPA, UL508A codes and control system safety standards
- PLC programming, preferably Beckhoff TwinCAT structured text
- Safety PLC programming and implementation
- HMI, SCADA, IoT (MQTT, OPC-UA), Ignition systems with user-friendly design and machine health monitoring
- Field bus networking protocols (EtherCAT, Profinet, Profisafe, Ethernet/IP preferred)
- Robotics programming, preferably ABB
- Industrial software application to mechanical assemblies, electrical systems, sensors, pneumatics, and hydraulics
Additional Requirements
- Ability to work long hours and weekends as necessary to support critical milestones
- Willing to travel up to 10%
